Under the Course of Study set out by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, 74 credits or more is the number designated as being required for graduation from senior high school. The subjects, courses, and number of credits needed for graduation are generally common to all schools and depart- ments.
However, there are some exceptions. (Please note that one lesson hour is 50 minutes long and 35 lesson hours constitute one credit). At metropolitan senior high schools, in addition to the subjects and courses set out as being mandatory under the terms of the General Policies Regarding Curriculum Formulation, "People and Society" has been established as a subject unique to Tokyo. Furthermore, Japanese history has been positioned as a mandatory subject for students commencing their studies from Fiscal 2012.
Under the auspices of the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education, in addition to general stream courses, senior high schools with various departments such as professional departments (agriculture, industry, and com-merce, etc.) and comprehensive departments have been established. Accordingly, the break- down of the number of units required for gradua- tion for each subject can depend on the school.
